Work

A Lifetime of Resistance and Purpose

Four major pillars that have defined my mission over the decades.

My work has spanned across decades, continents, and causes, but it is all bound by a single thread: the moral obligation to stand up against tyranny and protect the vulnerable. Here are the four pillars of my life's mission:

Ecology and Sea Turtles

Ken O'Keefe's commitment to marine conservation runs deep. In Hawaii, he personally rescued 46 endangered green sea turtles that were entangled in monofilament fishing line and removed tons of harmful debris - including 13 deadly "ghost nets" - from the ocean. Ken also led the charge to establish the Pupukea Marine Life Sanctuary on Oahu's North Shore, protecting vital reef ecosystems for future generations.

Human Rights and Law

Ken is an unwavering advocate for human rights and the rule of law. He uses his platform to expose war crimes and injustices, speaking out against illegal wars and standing up for communities under oppression. From calling for accountability in the aftermath of 9/11 to championing the rights of Palestinians, Ken's work emphasizes that justice and fundamental rights must apply equally to all people.

Activism and Direct Action

Throughout his life, Ken O'Keefe has put himself on the front lines of change. He believes in action over rhetoric - as shown when he organized the 2003 Human Shield Action in Iraq, placing himself (and other volunteers) in war zones to protect innocent lives. In 2010, aboard the Gaza-bound Mavi Marmara, Ken famously confronted and disarmed two Israeli commandos during a raid that turned deadly, defending his fellow humanitarians and exemplifying courage in the face of injustice.

World Citizenship and Social Enterprise

Ken's vision extends beyond borders. After renouncing his U.S. citizenship post-9/11, he embraced the concept of world citizenship - the idea that our common humanity comes before any nationality. This global outlook inspired bold initiatives like Aloha Palestine and the "Trade Not Aid" campaign, which aimed to open commerce with Gaza and empower people through trade instead of charity. Ken continues to develop The Justice Project (TJP) social enterprise and other ventures that unite communities, promote self-sufficiency, and challenge the status quo in pursuit of a more just world.
